Art In The Park
with April South-Olson

Art in the Park is a summer tradition throughout Delta County. It's great fun and effective learning!
This year, students create a variety of zany, fanciful creatures while learning to create pattern and design using motifs and color.
Local artist Aprol South-Olson offers demonstrations for these varied hands-on projects. Each session lasts 1 1/2 hours and presents a unique task. All materials are provided.

Week 1: Yarn Painting
The Huickol (pronounced Wee-chol) people inhabit the most remote parts pf north central Mexico. Their beautiful yarn paintings, once offerings to the Saints, now show their relationships to their world and the spiritual world.
We'll make yarn paintings, too, filled with energy, spirit and color. And, like the Huichol people, we'll use animals as a symbol.

           Week 2: Animal Carnival Mask
Many celebrations use masks, from Halloween parties to huge celebrations like Mardi Gras and Carnival. You'll choose a template for your mask, practice drawing, and create a realistic or fantastic animal mask of your own. Decorations can be as complex as you like!

Week 3: Drawing with Thread
This week's project uses the idea of camouflage. We'll start with a watercolor background in the style of abstract art made by Wassily Kandinsky in 1913, then use thread to find the animal image hidden there. Who knows what might turn up?

            Week 4: Animal Tangle
First step is to draw an animal to use as the basis for the wild imaginings to follow. Animal Tangle is like ZenTangle - you'll decorate your animal's shape with intricate patterns like doodles. You'll walk away amazed with your beautiful exotic animals.

SUMMER 2009

ART IN THE PARK

For this Year’s Art in the Park, artist April South-Olson will take you on an exploration through the field of Cryptozoology. We’re going to search for the “Superstar” cryptids, animals that only a few scientists are convinced really do exist -- the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot, and the Thunderbird. You will also have the opportunity to create your own cryptid monster. You won’t want to miss this adventure!

Week 1:  Nessie, the Monster of Loch Ness

It’s an underwater adventure at the park, as we go to Scotland in search of the most famous cryptid, the Loch Ness Monster. You’ll design and set your own scene featuring this phenomenal creature using paints, wood, and found objects.

Week2:  Thunderbird

Take to the skies to join the monstrous Thunderbird. With a wing span of 15 to 20 feet we can’t miss him, and you’ll have the opportunity to decorate and construct your own kite. (If flying is new to you, we’ll show you how to soar.)
Week 3:  Create your own Cryptid –

Art in the Park is an imagination factory this week, where you’ll build your very own monster. Maybe yours will have tentacles, three eyes, or hair down to its toes. You’ll have to be there to make it come true. Choose from corrugated cardboard, wires, assorted mechanical parts and pieces, and art parts to help you put your creature together!

Week 4:  Bigfoot

This final week, we’re going to the Pacific Northwest and into the old-growth forest, hunting for Bigfoot. We will track Bigfoot prints until we find everything we need to make a one-of-a-kind shoe sculpture!
