Community-Wide Cultural Planning Project Wraps Up,
September 02 |
|
Were in the final inning of Community Expressions 2002 - our community-wide cultural planning project, funded by the Michigan Council for the Arts & Cultural Affairs with local partners: the Community Foundation for Delta County, Bay de Noc Community College, City of Escanaba, City of Gladstone, Escanaba Library, Escanaba Downtown Development Authority, Escanaba Area Schools, Gladstone Area Schools, Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District, CUPPAD Regional Commission, Players de Noc, and Delta County Chamber of Commerce.
Understanding the tangible value arts and cultural activities deliver to a community is central to propelling this kind of long-term planning. In June, 25 members of the South Central Upper Peninsula community came together to create a shared practical vision for the role and development of the regions cultural resources and strategy to achieve it. The last session on Aug. 28 will focus on a tactical plan to implement the strategy.
The participants in the June retreat devised a shared practical vision, that reads:
Five years from now the arts and culture of Delta County and the South Central Upper Peninsula will be creating economic opportunity for all, fostering social inclusiveness and development, and sustaining a sense of regional identity and pride.
Three strategic directions were set during the meeting in June, including: Creating Regional Support; Programming to Celebrate and Focus on Our Identity; and Develop the Infrastructure or Arts & Culture Collaboration.
Look for the highlights of our Community Expressions 2002 action plan in the winter issue of Arts News.
