BAY AREA ARTS ASSOCIATION WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Winners in the Bay Area Arts Association Membership Show have been announced. Juried by artist Helen House, the ten Honorable Mentions, First, Second and Third places and Best of Show included several well-known Manistique artists.

Best of Show went to Martha Fieber of Manistique for her fiber piece “Red Osier”. According to House, Fieber created a scene “that draws the viewer in., then begs them to fall into it.”

First Place winner: Martha Fieber

“It’s a scene familiar to those of us in the
north woods, but goes way beyond being representational,” House said.

“Early Morning Glow” by Gladstone’s Jane Ladeck, reflects in watercolor and graphite the nearly translucent feel of a morning meadow. Escanaba resident Brian Burroughs’ 2nd Place graphite piece “Egg” is very different, with an intriguing image of people floating above trees and a giant egg. Karla Sunn of Rapid River was awarded 3rd Place for her oil painting “Blueberry Afternoon”, showing a family picking berries by Lake Michigan.

All artists in the show are members of Bay Area Arts Association, and are either from the Upper Peninsula or connected in some way. The theme of place runs through the show as a subtle undertone, with scenes and materials reflecting life here.

Judging the 136 pieces in the multi-media show was “great”, according to House.

“I really enjoyed getting a feel for the wide range of artists in our area,” she said. “It was delightful to see the pieces that stood out as unique from new artists, and to renew acquaintance with the old standbys.”

The show is up through June 9. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge to visit the Bonifas or tour the Gallery. For more information call 786-3833.
