The public is invited to a free gallery talk by featured artist Philip Sugden titled “Art and Madness”, a slide/video presentation looking at the works of Adolf Wolfli in context with shaman art, and some religious art and modern art on Tuesday, June 27, to celebrate the opening of the exhibit 3 Artists: 3 Languages in the Alice Uren Powers Gallery at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center.
Sugden, a multi-media artist, has been featured before in the Bonifas Gallery, twice as artist and once as juror for the Northern Exposure XI exhibit.
Gregg Luginbuhl, a ceramist who explores such varied forms as raku, soda fired stoneware and porcelain, is the second of the three exhibitors. He and Sugden will each lead a workshop on Wednesday, June 28.
Luginbuhl will present Clay Handbuilding Using Mold Forms from 9 a.m. to noon. This artist-level workshop in clay begins with hand-built hump molds, and students will work to create dynamic wall plate sculptures, each piece an individual non-objective composition.
Projects are designed for those with some basic ceramic forming experience. Wheel-throwing skills are not required.
Sugden will discuss Archetypes & Art: Exploring the Visual Unconscious from 2 to 5 p.m. on the 28th.
He says, “Through the use of slides and some painting and drawing exercises, you will be introduced to the idea that some forms and shapes exist in the ‘collective unconscious’ and under certain conditions, find their way into our personal artwork.“
Using examples from art history, students will work toward the discovery of these forms in their personal creative process. Pastels or watercolors will be the vehicles for this voyage, under Sugden’s guidance.
Fees for the clay class are $40 for Bonifas members and $50 for non-members. Fees for the Archetypes class are $32 for Bonifas members and $40 for non-members. Materials are included.
The third artist in the exhibit, photographer Darryl Moody, will present a Gallery Walk in July at the exhibit’s close. All three artists are professors at Bluffton College in Bluffton, Ohio.
To register or for more information, call the Bonifas at 786-3833.
