Michigan Water Color Society Traveling Show
Traditional and non-traditional watercolors will be the focus of the Michigan Water Color Society Traveling Show, beginning on Tuesday, August 8, in the Bonifas Art Center Gallery.
The show consists of 68 pieces, each of which is a winner in the current year’s competitions sponsored by the Society.
“The public tends to think of watercolors as sweet and misty,” said Gallery Director Pasqua Warstler. “Some are, but people who view this show will come away with a new appreciation for the applications of this medium.”
The pieces in the exhibit range from traditional landscapes and still lifes to abstracts.
“Even the still lifes aren’t necessarily traditional,” Warstler said. “I love the canvas that’s a hodge-podge of pea pods!”
During this show, local artists are invited to bring their paints and easels into the Gallery and to study the wide range of exemplary techniques used by these leading watercolorists.
“In many large art museums, it’s traditional to allow students to paint the works exhibited,” Warstler explained. “It helps improve technique and widen horizons.”
“If you go to the Louvre, you’ll find students painting the Mona Lisa or other famous pieces. It’s part of the education process.”
