Several area artists are winners in the Northern Exposure XVI exhibit on display at the Bonifas Arts Center. Eighteen prizes were awarded at a Meet the Artist reception that featured remarks by juror Kathie Briggs of Charlevoix as well as from prize sponsors.
Carol Irving of Escanaba won a $250 award from the Manistique Art Club for her hand-woven Starry Starry Night, as well as being chosen for a Bay College purchase prize. Brian Burroughs of Escanaba won an Honorable Mention award from Frame Crafters of Escanaba and the Arts Center for his graphite piece You Are Not Alone.
Rapid River s Tracy Anderson won an Honorable Mention from Sviland s Paint and the East Ludington Gallery of Escanaba for her oil painting Among the Beeches. Under the Bridge, a lomography photo by Dan Klim of Escanaba was also chosen by Bay College for a purchase prize.
The annual multi-media exhibit began as a way to celebrate the work of Upper Peninsula artists. It brings artists into contact with jurors from out of the area; this year 88 pieces were selected for the show by juror Kathie Briggs of Charlevoix from 220 submissions.
Visitors are invited to drop by the Gallery at no charge, thanks in part to sponsorship from Gallery Partner Escanaba Veterinary Clinic. It. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The show is on display at 700 1st Avenue South in Escanaba through December 17. It is accompanied through December 10 by the Bay Area Art Association Membership Show in the Studio Gallery. For more information call (906) 786-3833 or visit www.bonifasarts.org.
Prizes for Northern Exposure XVI include cash and certificate awards, the chance to display in other galleries, and purchase prizes by which sponsors purchase art from the show for their collections.
