Fires Around the Lakes: Ten Years After

Winners in the regional glass competition Fires Around the Lakes: Ten Years After were announced on Friday, June 26, at the opening reception for the show at the Bonifas Arts Center. Glass artist, show curator and Arts Center Special Events Director Beth Cox awarded prizes for pieces chosen by juror Herb Babcock of Oxford, MI. The show consists of glass in all forms, from blown glass to stained glass, and from jewelry to vases. It is on display through July 30. Arts Center hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Best of Show was Albert Young of Detroit for "Vessel". He was the winner of a kiln donated by Delphi Glass of Lansing, MI.

JUROR:
Artist Herb Babcock served as juror of Fires Around the Lakes. Originally a metal sculptor, Babcock discovered hot glass between receipt of his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He created a series of Glass Image Vessels in 1974 and eventually began to combine metal and glass in sculpture. Babcock's work is represented in numerous national and international exhibits, galleries and collections. He currently serves as Chairman of the Glass Department at the College for Creative Studies and has been a professor at CCS since 1974. He lives in Oxford, Michigan.
