Area elders can join free Senior Art ceramic pottery classes May 9 and 23 from 1-3 p.m. at the Bonifas Arts Center.
On May 9, participants will form at least two slab (hand-built) stoneware clay pieces—the first a fish and the second a decorative mask, said Al Hansen, instructor.
Hansen will demonstrate basic techniques (such as stamping, shaping, and texturing with dry plants), discuss how to find inspiration from nature (like the texture of tree bark), and provide ceramic and photo examples to inspire, but each elder will have tremendous creative freedom, he said.
On May 23, seniors’ creations, having been fired in the kiln, can then be glazed, elders using color and shine to complete their works of art, Hansen said.
“It’s a lot of fun to work with clay,” said Hansen, who encouraged area seniors to “come on down and have some fun.”
