Open House / Gallery Reception: Friday, July 12 from 3 – 5 PM (Arts & Culture Day)
FREE TO THE PUBLIC
Along with the City of Escanaba and the Esky 150 committee, the Bonifas Arts Center is part of the Esky 150 celebrations slated for this summer. You’re invited to be a partner, too. “We’re an art-rich community,” said Pasqua Warstler, Bonifas Gallery and Education Director. “Our display will celebrate that, with help from area residents.”
An exhibit of community art showing original artwork depicting places and faces from Escanaba’s history is set for June 20 through August 1, with a free reception on Arts & Culture Day, Friday, July 12, 3 - 5 PM.
An ad hoc committee of community artists and historians has been hard at work for many months now, identifying individuals who were instrumental and influential in Escanaba’s arts community. Once identified, they committee has been working on locating examples of work and stories relating to the artists.
Warstler said anyone wishing to participate by loaning artwork to the exhibit, is asked to bring the pieces to the Center now through June 13. They may be picked up after the show is concluded. Acknowledgement of the loans will be made in Gallery signage, and lenders are invited to include a brief story about the piece of art, and its subject or artist.
“From Alice Powers to Joann Biallas (Leffel) and from Addison to Ritch Brannstrom, we have a wonderful heritage here. We’re hoping our community can help us show it off,” Warstler said.
While the official sesquicentennial celebration is stated for just two weeks, Places and Faces – Recalling Escanaba’s Heritage will run for six weeks. The Arts Center will also be producing a historically based live “radio show” set for the evening of July 11 at the Karas Band Shell.
Anyone with an interesting piece of art and artist story is invited to contact the Arts Center, “application forms for the show will be available online at bonifasarts.org in February,” Warstler said. Please call the Arts' Center with questions at (906) 786-3833.
