Players de Noc’s production “Arsenic and Old Lace” opens Friday, Oct. 2, at the Bonifas Theater.
Brennan Richardson plays Mortimer Brewster, the man who tries to keep the family antics from his fiancee. He says learning the fast paced action on the stage was difficult.
“The blocking was kind of tough for me,” Richardson said. “Especially trying to learn lines at the same time. I would start to get my lines down but then I’d have to think where do I have to go at this point? There are similar scenes in the show where I’m running across the stage and I have to think, ‘do I go to the window this time, do I go in this door or pick up the phone?’ But, it’s all come together.”
This is Carolyn Beauvais’ first play as director. She says it can be difficult to produce a play that is well known.
“Yes, I did not want them to watch the movie because it’s a little different from movie. There’s a different story line but it’s still fun and has lots of intrigue,” Beauvais said.
Bailey Mannien did know know the story before she got a part in the play. As Mortimer’s fiancee, Elaine Harper, she said she took her direction from the director.
“I like that approach to it because I wasn’t trying to perceive the character before auditioning. I got to hear what the director wanted and how she wanted me to portray Elaine,” said Mannien.
The play runs Friday and Saturday, a Sunday matinee and again next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
