Awards were presented during the opening reception of the Fabrications V: U.P. Fiber Arts exhibit at the Bonifas. The show is juried by fiber artist Sarah Eichhorn, of Milwaukee, WI.
1st place $350 award: Silver Island- by Stella Larkin – I really enjoyed everything about this piece. It is very sophisticated and pleasing on the eye. It has great movement from top to bottom, and lots of texture along the way to keep the viewer interested. I appreciate the inspiration and usage of materials from nature.
2nd place $250 award: Variation Vessel II – by Cindy Wedig – I really enjoyed the composition of this piece, and the use of mixed mediums to achieve such balance. The vessel itself has great texture and movement, and I really appreciate how the felted pieces were incorporated into it. The colors used in the felted pieces nicely compliment the vessel.
3rd place award: sponsored by Tebear Sewing & Quilting with a $200 gift certificate to their store and goes to Eco Felted Wool Scarf – by Ruth Steinhagen – The details in this piece are incredible. I really enjoyed all of the different textures and composition of it. I think the way it is displayed really highlights how lovely it is.
Honorable Mention: 1 year magazine subscription to Quilting Arts goes to: Ode to Gee’s Bend- by Amber Lippold – I’m a big fan of Gee’s Bend Quilts. The color and fabric choices are really nice on this piece, and I like the added stitch texture in the natural section.
Honorable Mention: $25 gift cert to Time Flies Quilt and Sew goes to: Gathering of Monarchs- by Phillis Fleury – Beautiful work in capturing the delicate nature of such an important insect! I really like how the artist chose to display these butterflies- having them clustered together creates a stronger impact.
